ASUS Router 2.4GHz Not Working

Although Wi-Fi technology has evolved over time, the 2.4GHz (Gigahertz), is still the most widely used way to transmit data via wireless networks. When it’s one of the most common bands used, we can’t neglect it.

Our ASUS router 2.4 GHz not working only means that there’s a problem in the hardware or in the firmware. First, let’s understand the importance and then how to fix it.

Important significance of 2.4 GHz

Dual-band routers are the norm in commercial routers. Dual-band routers can be used to support both 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band. There’s an emerging 6 GHz frequency band, but it’s not commercial yet. It’ll take some time.

Because many devices use the 2.4GHz frequency band to connect to Wi Fi, it is very important. You have more options, the range is greater than 5 GHz and the connection is stronger.

However, the 5 GHz band is faster than 2.4 GHz, but it’s easily disrupted. Many objects can easily interfere with the signal, and the range is limited. The 2.4 GHz band is therefore essential.

Faults with Hardware or Firmware

The main reason your ASUS router 2.4 GHz band isn’t working is the fact that it is not acting as a dual-band router as stated. Users reported that their ASUS routers were experiencing problems. So, even if it’s straight out of the box, there is no possibility to connect to the 2.4 GHz band.

Although DD-WRT is an open-source firmware that can be installed on your router, we don’t believe it will help. Logging into your ASUS router settings page will show the 2.4GHz band functioning perfectly.

First, return the router to get a newer model for the same price. You should return the router immediately if this happens. However, if you believe that it’s not the case, there are some things we can do.

We have listed solutions that will solve most problems with your ASUS router. It might help if you think there is a way to turn on the 2.4 GHz band on your router.

Other things you can do are turn off smart connect, move the router to a better place, reset it to factory settings, switch channels, and update your device’s drivers.

1.   Update firmware for ASUS

Two ways to do an update are available. Both involve going to http://router.asus.com, your main login page. This will take you directly to your ASUS router’s main settings page.

  • Automatic check: After you enter the main page, there’s going to be a pop-up A notification advising that a new version has been released. Click on Get the latest updateThe pop-up.

You’ll get to Administration, and you’ll see the Firmware upgrade button. Click on it, and once it’s all good and done, go to AdministrationFind the location Factory default section under Restore/Save/Upload Settings. Click here RestoreThis will cause your router to reset. This should update the firmware.

  • Manual update: First, you need to get the firmware version you prefer from ASUS’s download center. Enter your model name to locate the firmware version that you want.

2.   Channel setup

Log in to the settings page for your ASUS router. Advanced SettingsTab on the left pane and click Select Wireless. Once you do this, you’ll see a General tab, and you’ll see the Band.

Select the 2.4 GHzBand and choose the Channel bandwidthAs high as 20/40MHz (Megahertz). This should fix the problem and allow your 2.4 GHz frequency band to run without any interference. If this doesn’t work, you can switch channels.

Simply locate the Control Channel and change it to any channel you’d like to use. You can experiment a bit to find the best channel. Use the Drop-down menuChange channels These are the ones we recommend. 1, 6, and 11. because they don’t overlap with other channels.

3.   Smart Connect is disabled

It’s fairly easy to disable smart connect. From the main page of your router’s settings, go to the Tab Advanced Settings, click on Wireless, and under the General tab of the Wireless section, you’ll see Smart Connect enabledYou can toggle it off.

If you are still having problems with signal quality, and the 2.4 GHz band finally becomes visible, then it is time to move the router.

4.   The router should be moved to a better location

Avoid placing your router into corners. If you live in multiple-story buildings, your router should be placed on a shelf higher than the rest to ensure a better signal reach. If not, this doesn’t make a lot of difference.

Avoid placing your router near fish tanks as water can reflect the Wi-Fi signal. You should find a good place to put it and then move the antennas around to check if there are any improvements in the connection.

5.   Factory reset

If you’ve followed the first step to the point, then you’ve already done a factory reset on your ASUS router. There’s an easy way to do this. Simply locate the Reset buttonPress the button behind the router.

If you’d like to do it the more complicated way, go to the settings page, go to the Tab Advanced Settings > Administration >Save/Restore/Upload settings > Factory default > Restore. Click OK once prompted and you’re done.

6.   Device driver update

The driver, and not the router, might cause problems. The driver needs to be updated. Click the Search box next to the start menu, type “Device Manager” and click on the first result.

Click on the link to locate it Network adapters section and right-click the wireless adapter. Click on Update driver > Auto-search for drivers. You are now done. The driver should be updated and your Wi-Fi should work as intended.


If the 2.4GHz band is not available in your box, please contact the manufacturer or ISP to have it replaced. It’s not likely that there is a hardware problem. You can try different channels, update the firmware, do a factory reset, or move the router.
