How to Find Archived Emails in Gmail

It is not possible to delete emails from Gmail. They will be lost forever if you empty your trash folder. Archiving emails is a better option than deleting them. This allows you to retrieve and find the emails later.

How to archive emails in Gmail

You can archive an email in Gmail by simply selecting an email (or several emails) and clicking the Archive button.

When you select emails on the Gmail website, the “Archive” button appears in the menu directly above your list of emails.

Tap the Archive button on the top menu of the Gmail app for iPhone or Android. The Archive button is the same design and layout as the one on the Gmail website.

All emails you archive will be deleted from your main Gmail Inbox.

However, you can still view them in any folder created using Gmail labels.

Use the All Mail Label to find Archived Emails in Gmail

We’ve already mentioned that archived emails are not visible in the standard Gmail view. You can find the archived email in Gmail by switching to the “All Mail” folder view.

This will display all your Gmail email addresses in one long list. It includes priority emails as well as emails that were automatically categorized. You can view this list by clicking the “All Mail” view label in the left Gmail menu on the Gmail website.

Tap the hamburger menu icon at the top-left corner to do this in Gmail. Scroll down to the “All Mail Label” label.

This has a downside, especially if there are a lot of emails. If you haven’t archived any emails recently, this option might be fine. However, you may need to use Gmail’s search bar to locate the specific archived email.

Use the Search Bar to find Archived Emails in Gmail

There is no archive label that you can search for with the Gmail search bar on the Gmail website and in the Gmail App.

To search for an archived email, you will need to know its subject, sender, and/or author. Alternatively, you can use advanced Gmail search filters to search for emails that aren’t in typical folders like your inbox folder, sent folder, and drafts folder.

This should include your archived email. In the search bar, type “-in-:Sent” and then enter “-in-:Draft –in Inbox”. This can be done in the Gmail app, or on the Gmail site.

To remove emails with a category label, you can add “has:nouserlabels to your Gmail search query.” You can view an email that has been categorized if it is in your labeled folder.

Although this method is not foolproof, it can help you find your archived email messages if they aren’t easy to find using a basic search or the “All Mail” folder.
