It is best to use a laptop, a computer with a wired connection and a computer to access your wireless router. However, you can modify the router settings by using a smartphone or tablet with a wireless connection.
These are the main reasons you should use wired connectivity:
- Wireless connections can become unstable or break down during certain changes
- You will be logged out after you save changes such as changing the router password.
In most cases, however, our smartphones can be used to make quick changes. It is useful to know how to access router settings via a smartphone.
You can access the router settings via your smartphone
Accessing router settings can be done using the same steps in both iOS and Android smartphones. Here are the steps for accessing your router via your smartphone.
1. Connect to your wireless network
Since you can’t plug in your network cable into your smartphone you will have to use your wireless network. You can’t make any changes to your router if it isn’t connected, as we have stated in previous router login guides.
2. Start the web browser from your smartphone
It doesn’t matter whether you are using Safari or Google Chrome browser, you need a web browser to access the router settings. You should also know that while the router settings cannot be accessed from the Internet, your home network must function.
3. Type the default router IP into the address bar
This IP address can vary depending on which wireless router you’re currently using. It could be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1. If you don’t know the default router IP address you can try typing any of these IP addresses. You will be asked for your username and password in a pop-up window. Also, you can find the router’s IP (default gateway) on your own. This is how you do it on your iPhone or Android phone.
After entering the default IP address, tap the Go button at the virtual keyboard.
4. Enter your default router login details
The default router username/password is found in the user manual, or on a label on the side or under the router.
In case you can’t find these login details there, try searching our website. You can also go to the official website.
Try also combining these login credentials:
Username: admin, user
PasswOderd: password, admin orLeave it empty.
These are the most frequent login details so it’s worth giving a shot.
In the end, if none of the combinations work or you can’t find the router username and password for some reason, you will have to reset the router to factory defaults. You will then be able login using the default login details.
5. Make the changes you need
You must now visit the router settings page. It may look a little different than the one you see when you log in using your computer but it’s because of the responsive design. You can browse until you find what settings you want.
Can’t access the router settings from your phone? Checklist
If you are having trouble logging in to your router, please refer to the following checklist. You can verify that everything is correct.
- Is your smartphone connected with the Wi-Fi network
- Did you enter the correct IP address?
- Did you correctly type the IP?
- Did you put the IP into the URL bar?
- Are you able to remember the default username and password?
These issues are briefly explained and why it’s important to examine them closely.
Is your smartphone connected with the Wi-Fi network
We have already said that you can’t login to the router if you aren’t connected to the wireless network. Only devices that are part the home network can communicate with each other in the network. If the device is not part of the network it won’t be able to communicate with the router. You should do this first. Next, you can go on to the next step to log into your router with the phone.
Did you enter the correct IP address?
If you don’t know the router’s IP you need to find the right one. The error message will be displayed if the IP is not correct. Entering the correct IP will open a window asking you to enter a username or password.
Did you correctly type the IP?
It is common to make typos when you type the router’s IP address. It is not uncommon to make a typing error when entering the IP address of your router. Sometimes, people write letters instead of numbers (o instead 0 and l instead 1). That is the reason why they can’t login.
Did you put the IP into the URL bar?
The URL (or Address bar) at the top is where you should enter your router default IP address. Android phones should open the Google Chrome browser and not the Google app. If you make an error here, you will only see the Google search results page and not the router login pages.
Are you able to remember the default username and password?
It is crucial to know your default router username password. Try to find them online, on the router itself, or in the user’s manual. You can also try to find the most commonly used passwords and usernames. While it may take some time, the results might not be as difficult as you think.
It is easy to access router settings via a smartphone, as you can see. It will be useful in case you can’t use your laptop or desktop PC to login to your wireless router. You can also make necessary changes such as changing your Wi-Fi password or network name. This will increase the security of your Wi-Fi network.
