How to Setup Xiaomi Wi-Fi Extender?

by stacy

Xiaomi-Wi-Fi-extenderXiaomi is an emerging brand. This company has a small workforce, but is gaining more market share in each niche it chooses to compete. Their online sales focus is simplicity, affordability, good value, and easy selling. This is also true for their network equipment. You won’t find many extender models with the Xiaomi brand, but those you find will be simple to set up, use, and offer a good value for the price.

This will be easy if you know how to set up Wi-Fi routers. Still, if you never had to do anything similar, you’ll find instructions in this text easy to follow.

What does a Xiaomi Wi Fi Extender do?

Xiaomi Wi Fi extender is a Chinese wireless network device. It extends your network’s maximum range. The small, lightweight device must have a power outlet in order to function. It is too large to be used with multiple socket extension cables, so make sure you consider this when choosing the right place.

You can choose between a single or double-band extender. Depending on which router you have, you can choose either one or the other. Dual-band routers or extenders feature two antennas to cover the two Wi-Fi frequency ranges.

The 2,4 GHz frequency is the older and more widely used, while the 5 GHz spectrum is the other.

There are many devices that operate at 2,4GHz frequencies, which is more than the 5GHz. This has both a good side and a negative side. While you won’t have too much trouble connecting any device on 2,4 GHz, this also means there will be a lot of interference from multiple signals and a lot of congestion on this frequency band, resulting in slower internet speeds and unreliable connection.

You can choose the location to connect if you have a dual band router and an equal extender.

2,4 GHz will have more range but a bit slower speeds, and you can use it to connect the older devices and those that don’t require top Wi-Fi speed to work properly.

5 GHz will be slower but have a greater range. It will also be faster and less congested. It is the perfect choice for those newer devices that use high internet speeds.

You can increase both internet speed as well as reliability by dividing your devices among both bands.

However, keep in mind that the extender can’t boost your maximum internet speed provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). It will only extend your reach to a greater area by providing strong signal, so that you get the best internet speed possible.

How do you set up a Xiaomi Wi-Fi extender device?

The setup process can be divided into two segments—hardware and software setup.

The hardware configuration of the Xiaomi Wi-Fi extender

This is the easiest. Take the extender out of its packaging and examine the sticker at the back. Write down or memorize the default network name and default SSID. To speed up the setup, plug the extender as near as possible to the router.

Depending on your model, you may need to power it up using the power button. On some models, the extender will automatically turn on and start booting up after you plug it in. It will flash the power light to indicate that it is ready.

If you’re unsure, take a look at the manual. Wait for five to ten minutes before you start the software configuration.

Software configuration of Xiaomi Wi Fi extender

This step can be done in several ways, depending on the model and your preferences. WPS is the fastest and most direct way.

WPS stands to Wi-Fi Protected Settingup. This feature allows you to connect between compatible devices quickly and easily.

You can press the WPS button on your router or extender. Wait for them to pair. If all goes well, the extender and router will pair. You should then be able to connect using the same network password as the router to the extender.

If you wish to make changes to your extender’s settings, such as changing the SSID or creating a different password for it, you’ll need to utilize your smartphone and download the app from the app store. One is available on Android and iOS.

It’s known as the ‘Mi home app.’ Please look for it on the app store, download it, and install it. If you possess a Xiaomi smartphone, you almost certainly already have a Mi account. Use this account to access the app. If there isn’t one, make one.

You will see an option to scan available devices when you log in. Select this option, and wait for a while until you see the SSID number of the extender that you need to configure. To choose it, please tap on the image in the app.

By tapping on the picture, you’ll signal the extender to start searching for the available networks.

When you see your network SSIDs showing up, you’ll be able to connect to them using the same network password you use for any other device. Remember to connect to both the router and two-band extender.

The app will let you know if the extender has been placed too far from your router. If this happens, you can close the setup. The router’s indicator LED will stop blinking and continue to shine.

You can now choose the room in which your extender is to be installed and give it a name that will be used in the app.

You can now share your network with family members. You have the option to share your entire network or a specific device (extender).

Next, you have the option to choose a new name for the extender when using Wi-Fi search and a unique password for that device. You can either leave the password the same as your router or modify it to give you more control.

You could, for example, place the router outside with a simple name/password so that guests have access to the router but not the extender.

The settings will be applied by the extender rebooting. The indicator light will flash again as the extender reboots. It then turns solid once it is ready.

Now, let’s find a good, more permanent home for your extender.

Is there a good spot for a Xiaomi Wi Fi extender?

One common mistake people make when finding the best place for their Wi-Fi extenders is to place them at the very edge of the router’s signal range. This is done to maximize signal range. This will give you more coverage but a slower speed due to poor signal between router and extender.

When determining the best location for the extender, you must consider two main factors: the location of the router and the characteristics of the area you wish to cover with Wi-Fi.

Wireless signals carrying radio waves can lose significant power when they penetrate multiple walls or floors. They also travel spherically, from their origin.

Multi-story buildings can be affected by the above.

The extender should be placed in the center of the property, roughly halfway or less from the router’s maximum signal range. Place the extender halfway between the router and the ‘dark’ area you want to cover with the Wi-Fi signal if your router is already in the centre of the property.

An LED indicator may be found on some extender models. It indicates the strength of the signal. This indicator can be used to determine if the location is close enough to a router or you can access information from the Mi Home App.

The process of configuring a Wi Fi extender is simple. The router will start to turn on when you plug it into a power outlet. Press the WPS buttons on your router and extender and wait for them to pair up. If not, download the ‘Mi home’ app available for iOS and Android. Follow the instructions to log in or create an account.

Once everything is set up, you can find the best position for the extender. You can use the signal strength LED indicator at the top of your device or the Mi Home App if there’s no LED light. It should be roughly halfway to the router’s maximum signal range.
