Broadband Internet Definition

No matter what source you believe in, the recent increase in download/upload speeds is remarkable. The speeds continue to rise. The good news is that average speeds in all 50 states are greater than 25 Mbps. But that doesn’t change the fact that there are rural places with slow internet and inconsistent service. Some folks can only access 10 Mbps in certain places. In many regions, you can only obtain 30 Mbps.

FCC Minimum Speeds Required for Online Activities

FCC doesn’t just define benchmark speeds for broadband internet. It addresses all aspects of the online experience. Music Streaming Services

Music streaming isn’t very demanding and doesn’t consume too much bandwidth. For all streaming music services and online radios, 30 Mbps is enough. You can stream music simultaneously from multiple devices and still have enough bandwidth to do other things.

TIDAL, Amazon Music and Apple Music are the most popular platforms for Hi-Res audio streaming. But even if you are a serious audiophile, 30 Mb is sufficient. You can stream music and do other things simultaneously.

Video Streaming Services

Movie streaming is the most bandwidth-intensive online activity. It consumes more data than other activities and requires more bandwidth, especially 4K streaming. Minimum Required Speeds for Video Streaming

Netflix is perhaps the most popular streaming service. Netflix offers content in SD and HD as well as 4K. 4K streaming requires 25 Mbps but doesn’t actually consume 25 Mbps. 25Mbps is the minimum speed recommended, and not the minimum required speed. Netflix will usually consume 15-20 Mbps most of the time.

To sum it all, 30 Mbps is sufficient for most video streaming platforms, even 4K videos. There will be bandwidth available for other activities, or connected devices.

Gaming (Traditional Gaming, Game Streaming, Cloud Gaming)

Gaming is likely more difficult than other online activities. Gaming doesn’t just depend on your download and upload speeds. Gaming also depends on the quality of your internet connection (latency, jitter). It’s not like other activities don’t depend on these factors, but their effects are much more noticeable during gaming.

FCC recommends 3-4Mbps download speed for gaming. FCC doesn’t say anything about upload, but you will need at least 1 Mbps upload. Some games can be played with a 0.5 Mbps upload. All of these recommendations are only applicable to traditional gaming if you have the game installed on all your PCs. Your PCs will render the game and you will only transmit your commands and location information to the server. So, you’re not receiving any video, and that’s the reason why you need such low speeds for gaming.

Low latency (or ping) is required for download and upload speeds. Low refers to anything less than 60ms and ideally, under 30ms. While you can probably play online games even with a higher latency (up to 130ms), it’s best to keep your latency below 200ms. In case you don’t know what latency is, it’s the delay created by various processing components during communication between your PC and your game server. 

Speed Test Recommended Latency

Low jitter is required to achieve download/upload speeds as well as low latency. Jitter measures how stable (or unpredictable) your latency. Your gaming experience will suffer if your latency fluctuates frequently. Gaming jitter is acceptable at 30ms.

If you have a good upload speed, low latency, and low jitter, traditional gaming can be done with 30 Mbps. Long download times are the only “problem” you might have with 30 Mbps. A 50 GB video game will take roughly 4 hours to download under perfect conditions. In reality, downloading the game will take more than 4 hours.

Cloud gaming is a newer form of gaming, and the FCC makes no recommendations for it. Because the game does not need to be installed on your PC, cloud gaming is more demanding than traditional gaming. The game is rendered on a gaming server in this case. The video is then streamed to your computer. With video streaming, cloud gaming is identical to traditional gaming. You’ll need different speeds depending on the service you choose and the quality of video you want. Low jitter and latency are also significant.

Your 30 Mbps should be sufficient to play all of the cloud gaming services at 720p. It should also work well enough to play 1080p games, although you might experience some lagging when playing 1080p. Cloud gaming in 4K is not available from many services, and 30 Mbps is certainly not sufficient for 4K gaming.

You shouldn’t have any problems using Skype or Zoom with 30 Mbps download. You can easily have conference calls in 1080p, and there’ll be lots of bandwidth left for other activities. You may or not be able send HD video depending on how fast your upload speed is. Plans that offer 30 Mbps download usually include at least 3Mbps upload. This should provide enough bandwidth for both 1-on-1 and group HD calling.

The major issue is that you can’t execute numerous bandwidth-intensive tasks at the same time. As a result, you won’t be able to connect many devices to the network and use one for 4K streaming, another for cloud gaming, a third for 1080p video streaming, and a fourth for Skype conference calls.
