Opendoor in San Francisco Intends to Hire Nearly 100 Canadian Engineers

Opendoor, San Francisco’s largest opendoor company, opened its doors to over 1,000 new employees last year. It has now expanded to the Canadian market.

Opendoor is an online company that facilitates residential real estate sales and purchases. The company uses an internet approach to make quick cash bids on properties, then renovates them and then puts them back on the market. The company offers home buying services and financing through its mobile application.

The startup was founded in 2010 and went public in 2020 via a special-purpose acquisition firm (SPAC), led by Chamath Palihapitiya. It is widely recognized for its contribution to the iBuyer movement in real estate.

Opendoor’s Senior Software Engineering Director, Michael Gentili, announced that the company would soon be expanding its technical recruitment into Canada.

Gentili will join Opendoor’s newly acquired Canadian team, Skylight. Gentili was previously the Chief Technology Officer.

According to Gentili, “over the next several years, we want to add almost 100 people for our engineering product development team in Canada—starting with Toronto, which is one of the fastest-growing tech centres in North America.”

“Toronto is home to some of the world’s greatest digital talent, notably front-end and back-end engineers and data scientists—many of whom have graduated from some of the world’s leading tech institutions and gained experience working at cutting-edge firms.”

Opendoor Canada’s teams will work to develop financial platforms, pricing systems and technology infrastructure that are essential for the company’s worldwide operations.

John Tory, mayor of Toronto, thanked Opendoor for his investment in Toronto’s renowned technology sector. He also expressed his appreciation for the creation of jobs for the city’s talented workforce.
